It shows where a company aspires (or even imagines) to be in the future, depending on the developments in its industry. This is a futuristic approach for 5-10 years later. Everything that is done within the company today is to get to that position in the future.
It shows where a company is today, how it does what it does, for whom, and with whom.
When we combine both, we summarize in the vision and mission of the company the answer of what and how we are doing (mission) in order to be at the point where we want to be in the future (vision).
Mission can often change due to change, while vision will change much less over time as it shows where we want to be in the future.
While the vision shows the point we want to reach, the mission tells what and how we are doing on that path today.
Recently, in an article I can't remember where I read it, he referred to Jesus as a VISIONARY and his apostles as a MISSIONARY, which is a pretty good description. For Christianity, the vision is shown by Jesus, and his apostles are those who tell what is to be done on that path today. In other words, a company's vision is what it aspires to be and do in the future, and its mission is what it is today. Your mission statement of what you do today is a pathway to a vision of where you want to be tomorrow. We can also say that it is the last tactic you use to achieve your strategic goals.
